Over 35 people came out last Wednesday evening (Jan 6) to attend the first of a series of Rapid Fire Planning Nights. The goals of the Planning Nights are to identify strategies and prioritize action on all components of the community vision. Participants gathered at the Town Center Building to learn about current conditions on each topic from Town Planner Clare Rock and then got to work identifying ways the town could be working toward its vision.
Wednesday’s event focused on Affordability and Cost of Living; Community For All Ages; and Social, Cultural and Recreational Offerings. All ideas are now posted on new pages, and we invite you to read more and share your ideas.
On the topic of Affordability and a Reasonable Cost of Living, action items that ranked highly focused on the concepts of sharing and incentives rather than regulation. The group discussed ideas such as encouraging a Homeshare program, co-housing projects, and granny pods or auxiliary units to increase the availability of housing units. The group also discussed using incentives to encourage people to build smaller units rather than regulations to require smaller more affordable units.
On the topic of Community for All Ages, action items that ranked highly focused on building social capital and services which bring together seniors and youth. Specific ideas included forming volunteer networks to provide mentoring and other life skills across all ages and the development of a community center to host classes and events.
On the topic of Social, Cultural, and Recreational Offerings action items that ranked highly focused on expanding existing recreation facilities and working in partnership with private entities. Specific ideas included offering incentives for developers to build new facilities and increasing coordination and enhancements at existing facilities.
